Yes, you can smoke at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) in the designated areas in front of the terminal on the ground level. The clearest marked spot is on the west side of the building, and the airport’s own guidance places smoking and vaping in these front-of-terminal areas only. The terminal that opened in September 2020 is smoke-free inside, so all smoking is outdoors.
The New SLC Terminal
The current single terminal, opened in phases from September 2020, replaced the old terminal complex with one modern building; the final phase of the rebuild lands in October 2026, taking the airport to 94 gates. It is entirely smoke-free indoors, with no smoking rooms or enclosed smoking areas anywhere in the facility. Smoking and vaping are permitted only at the designated areas in front of the terminal on the ground level.
The most convenient and clearly signed spot is on the west side of the building at ground level. Arriving passengers can step out from baggage claim on the ground level and walk to the marked area in front of the building. Stand in the marked areas and keep clear of the doors, windows, and air intakes.
Concourse A and Concourse B
The airport has two linear concourses, A and B, running parallel to the central terminal building and linked to each other by underground pedestrian tunnels. Concourse A is the main base for Delta Air Lines, which operates SLC as a major hub, and Concourse B serves most other carriers along with several airline lounges. Both concourses are completely smoke-free, and that includes the Delta Sky Clubs and every other airline lounge — there are no smoking lounges or smoking areas past the TSA checkpoint.
If you need to smoke during a layover, you will have to exit the secure area, use the outdoor areas, and pass back through security to return. The terminal is large, so plan around 30 to 40 minutes for the full round trip including re-screening.
