Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) is Puerto Rico’s main international gateway and the busiest airport in the Caribbean. Named after the first democratically elected governor of Puerto Rico, SJU handles over 10 million passengers a year and connects the island to the US mainland, Latin America, and Europe. Major carriers include JetBlue, Southwest, United, American, Delta, Spirit, Frontier, and several Caribbean airlines. The airport sits in the Carolina municipality just east of San Juan proper. For smokers, SJU is entirely smoke-free indoors, and all smoking must happen outside the terminal buildings on the curbside.
Smoking Policy at San Juan Airport
Puerto Rico’s anti-smoking regulations, combined with federal law, prohibit smoking inside all enclosed public spaces including airports. SJU enforces this policy throughout all four terminals and every gate area, restaurant, shop, and lounge inside the facility. There are no indoor smoking rooms, cabins, or designated areas anywhere.
Designated outdoor smoking zones are available on the curbside outside the terminal buildings. These areas have ashtrays and signage. Because SJU has four separate terminals, there are outdoor zones accessible from multiple points along the airport complex.
How San Juan Airport Is Laid Out
SJU has four terminals: Terminal A, Terminal B, Terminal C, and Terminal D. The terminals are arranged in a row and connected on the landside, though the airport is large enough that walking between the far ends takes some time. Each terminal has its own gates and, in some cases, its own security screening area.
Terminal A handles many domestic US flights, including JetBlue, which has a major presence here. Terminal B and Terminal C serve a mix of domestic and international carriers. Terminal D handles additional international flights, including routes to Latin America and the Caribbean islands.
Terminal A
Smoking zones: None inside. Exit the terminal to the curbside. After security: No smoking areas past the TSA checkpoint.
Terminal A is one of the busier terminals at SJU, largely thanks to JetBlue’s hub operations. The walk from the Terminal A gates back to the terminal exit varies depending on which gate you are at, but it is generally manageable. Outdoor smoking zones are on the curbside directly outside Terminal A.
Terminal B
Smoking zones: None inside. Exit to the outdoor curbside areas. After security: No smoking areas.
Terminal B handles several carriers and connects to Terminal A on the landside. The outdoor smoking zones outside Terminal B are on the curbside, and you can reach them from the lower arrivals level or the upper departures level.
Terminal C
Smoking zones: None inside. Exit the terminal for designated outdoor zones. After security: No smoking areas.
Terminal C serves a mix of domestic and international flights. The walk from the gate area to the terminal exit is straightforward. Outdoor smoking zones are available on the curbside outside.
Terminal D
Smoking zones: None inside. Exit to the curbside. After security: No smoking areas.
Terminal D is at one end of the airport complex and handles many international flights, including connections to Caribbean islands and Latin American destinations. If your flight departs from Terminal D, be aware that the walk back from the outdoor smoking area through security can take longer during peak international departure times.
Outside the Terminal
The outdoor smoking zones at SJU are spread along the curbside outside the terminal buildings. Each terminal has nearby outdoor areas where you can smoke. The arrivals level curbside tends to be less congested than the departures level, especially during the busy late-afternoon period when flights to the US mainland start clustering.
San Juan’s tropical climate means it is warm and humid year-round, with temperatures typically between 75 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Afternoon rain showers are common, particularly from April through November, and they can roll in quickly. The outdoor smoking areas are not covered, so you may get caught in a brief tropical downpour. On the plus side, you will never have to deal with cold weather here.
E-Cigarettes and Vaping
Vaping and e-cigarettes are treated the same as traditional smoking at SJU. They are not permitted indoors anywhere in the airport, including restrooms, gate areas, lounges, and restaurants. All vaping must take place in the outdoor designated smoking zones. TSA allows e-cigarettes and vape devices in carry-on bags but not in checked luggage.
Tips for Smokers at San Juan Airport
- SJU can have long TSA lines, especially for US mainland flights, so budget 40 to 50 minutes for the exit-smoke-return process
- If you are connecting to a Caribbean island, smoke before your connecting flight since many smaller island airports have limited smoking areas
- The arrivals level curbside is usually less crowded and better for a quick smoke break
- JetBlue passengers in Terminal A should check gate assignment before leaving since the terminal is large
- Bring your own lighter since availability past security is limited
- Stay hydrated when smoking outside in the tropical heat and humidity
- Peak travel times at SJU are early morning and late afternoon when mainland flights cluster, so plan smoke breaks around these windows
