Yes, San Jose (CA) International Airport (SJC) has designated outdoor smoking areas outside both Terminal A and Terminal B, on the ticketing, baggage-claim and ground-transportation curbs. Indoors, the whole airport is smoke-free, so every smoking area is landside near the terminal entrances.
Terminal A – Designated Smoking Areas
Terminal A handles international arrivals plus carriers such as American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Hawaiian, Air Canada, Frontier, and Volaris. There are no smoking areas inside or past the TSA checkpoint. The marked outdoor zones, each with ash receptacles, are:
- North of ticketing, next to the staircase (upper departures level)
- Outside baggage claim at Stop 1 (lower arrivals level)
- North end of the curb
Terminal B – Designated Smoking Areas
Terminal B is the Southwest Airlines hub and also serves Alaska Airlines. Like Terminal A, it is fully smoke-free inside. Its designated outdoor smoking areas are:
- North of the ticketing lobby, next to the trees (upper departures level)
- South of baggage claim, next to the Lot 5 pay station shelter (lower arrivals level)
- Ground Transportation Area at Stops 3 and 8
International Arrivals and Rental Car Center
If you arrive on an international flight or are heading to the Rental Car Center, there are designated outdoor smoking areas at the north and south ends of the curb. The two terminals connect airside via a walkway between Gates 16 and 17, but all smoking is landside, so you’ll exit to the curb either way.
Summary
| Area | Smoking area | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal A | North of ticketing by staircase; baggage claim Stop 1; north end of curb | Outdoor only; before security |
| Terminal B | North of ticketing by trees; south of baggage claim by Lot 5 pay station; GT Stops 3 and 8 | Outdoor only; before security |
| International Arrivals / Rental Car Center | North and south ends of the curb | Outdoor only |
| Inside both terminals / airside | No smoking | Fully smoke-free; no airside lounges |
Every smoking area is before security, so re-screening adds time — if you’re connecting through a larger California hub, see our San Francisco (SFO) guide for that airport’s outdoor zones.
