Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), known locally as Sea-Tac, is the Pacific Northwest’s busiest airport and a major hub for Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines. It handles over 50 million passengers annually, connecting Seattle to destinations across the globe. If you smoke, be prepared: SEA is entirely smoke-free indoors under Washington State’s Clean Indoor Air Act. There are no indoor smoking zones, no smoking lounges, and nothing past security. Your only options are three designated outdoor spots on Lower Drive, all located before the security checkpoint.
Smoking Policy at SEA
Washington State’s Clean Indoor Air Act bans smoking inside all public buildings, and Seattle-Tacoma Airport enforces this without exception. Smoking, vaping, and the use of any electronic nicotine device are prohibited everywhere inside the airport. This includes the main terminal, all concourses and satellite buildings, airline lounges, restaurants, restrooms, jet bridges, and the parking garage. The only legal place to smoke at SEA is in the designated outdoor areas on Lower Drive.
How SEA Is Laid Out
Understanding SEA’s layout is important because the airport is large and getting back through security takes time. The Main Terminal building sits at the center, handling ticketing, check-in, and baggage claim. From there, four concourses and two satellite terminals branch out:
- Concourse A extends south from the main terminal
- Concourse B extends south, parallel to A
- Concourse C extends north from the main terminal
- Concourse D extends north, parallel to C
- North Satellite (N gates) is a separate building connected to the main terminal by an underground train
- South Satellite (S gates) is also a separate building connected by an underground train
All concourses and satellites are past TSA security. There is no way to reach them without clearing the checkpoint.
Main Terminal
The Main Terminal is where you check in, drop bags, clear security, and collect luggage on arrival. This is the only building where you have access to the outdoors without going through security. The three designated smoking areas are all located here on Lower Drive (the arrivals and ground transportation level).
Smoking areas: Door 5, Door 00, and Door 29 on Lower Drive. These are the only places at all of SEA where you can legally smoke.
Concourse A
Concourse A is the primary concourse for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air regional flights. It runs south from the main terminal with gates A1 through A14. It has several dining options and an Alaska Lounge.
Smoking areas: None. Concourse A is entirely smoke-free. There are no outdoor patios, balconies, or designated areas of any kind.
Concourse B
Concourse B sits south of the main terminal alongside Concourse A and serves Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines. Gates run from B1 through B15.
Smoking areas: None. Concourse B is entirely smoke-free with no exceptions.
Concourse C
Concourse C extends north from the main terminal and handles flights for American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Hawaiian Airlines. Gates range from C1 through C18.
Smoking areas: None. There are no smoking areas in Concourse C.
Concourse D
Concourse D runs north alongside Concourse C and serves United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Frontier Airlines. Gates run from D1 through D14.
Smoking areas: None. Concourse D is entirely smoke-free.
North Satellite (N Gates)
The North Satellite is a separate terminal building reached by an underground train from the main terminal. It handles Delta Air Lines flights and many international arrivals and departures. Gates are labeled N1 through N20. The train ride takes about two minutes each way.
Smoking areas: None. The North Satellite is completely enclosed and smoke-free. There are no outdoor areas accessible from this building. If your gate is in the North Satellite and you need to smoke, you must take the train back to the main terminal, exit security, walk to Lower Drive, smoke, and then clear TSA again. This round trip can easily take an hour or more.
South Satellite (S Gates)
The South Satellite is another separate terminal building connected by an underground train from the main terminal. It primarily serves Alaska Airlines with gates S1 through S16. Like the North Satellite, the train takes about two minutes.
Smoking areas: None. The South Satellite has no outdoor access and is completely smoke-free. The same exit-and-return process applies as with the North Satellite.
Outdoor Smoking Zones on Lower Drive
All three designated outdoor smoking areas at SEA are on Lower Drive, which is the ground-level roadway used for arrivals, ground transportation, and rideshare pickups. Look for signage and standing ashtrays at these doors:
- Door 5 — Located near the south end of the Main Terminal on the check-in concourse side. This is the closest smoking area if you entered through the main south entrance.
- Door 00 — Located near the center of the Main Terminal on the baggage claim level. This is convenient if you have just landed and collected your bags.
- Door 29 — Located near the north end of the Main Terminal on the check-in concourse side. This serves passengers whose airlines check in at the north end of the building.
Smoking is banned everywhere else outdoors at SEA, including the upper departures drive, the parking garage, all sidewalks outside the designated zones, and anywhere on the airfield.
No Smoking After Security
This is the critical reality for smokers at Sea-Tac: once you clear the TSA checkpoint, there is no way to smoke until you leave the secure area entirely. This applies to all four concourses and both satellite terminals. There are no balconies, outdoor terraces, or ventilated smoking rooms anywhere past security.
If you decide to exit for a smoke after clearing security, plan for the round trip to take 45 to 60 minutes during normal periods and potentially longer during peak travel times in summer or around holidays. You will need to go through the full TSA screening process again. If your gate is in the North or South Satellite, add another 10 to 15 minutes for the train each way.
Tips for Smokers at SEA
- Smoke before you enter security. This is the single most important piece of advice for smokers at Sea-Tac.
- If you have a long layover of three hours or more, budget at least 90 minutes for the exit-and-return process. Longer if your gate is in a satellite terminal.
- TSA PreCheck or CLEAR membership can significantly cut your re-screening time, making it more feasible to step out during a layover.
- The Door 00 area at baggage claim is the best spot if you have just landed. It is centrally located and easy to find.
- For departing passengers, use Door 5 or Door 29 depending on which end of the terminal your airline checks in at.
- Nicotine gum, patches, or pouches are a practical alternative if your connection is under three hours.
- SEA connects to downtown Seattle via the Link Light Rail, with the station accessible from the parking garage. If you have a very long layover and want a more comfortable smoking break, you could ride into the city, though this adds considerable time.
- Check TSA wait times on the SEA airport app or website before deciding to exit security.
