Yes, you can smoke at Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD), but only in the designated smoking areas outside the terminal. RFD is a single-terminal airport, and the interior, including the gate areas past security, is entirely smoke-free, so there is no indoor lounge.
Outside the Terminal
RFD’s designated smoking areas are outdoors along the curb fronting the terminal, set back from the entrance doors. Smoking outside these marked spots on airport property is not permitted, so look for the signage near the curb on the ground level as you exit. Because RFD is a compact airport, the walk between the gates and the curb is short.
There is no airside smoking option, so a departing smoker must finish curbside before clearing security. International or charter passengers connecting onward have to clear customs, exit to a designated area, and re-clear screening for the next flight.
Illinois State Rule
The Smoke Free Illinois Act bans smoking in all indoor public places, including the entire terminal, and requires smokers to stay at least 15 feet from any entrance, window, or air intake. E-cigarettes are treated the same as tobacco indoors, so the curbside designated areas are the practical place to smoke or vape.
