The new Kansas City International Airport terminal, which opened in February 2023, replaced the old three-terminal horseshoe design and is entirely smoke-free indoors.
New Single Terminal:
The modern terminal has a single large building with multiple concourses. Designated outdoor smoking areas are on the arrivals level (ground level) near the curbside and ground transportation area. Exit through baggage claim and follow signage to the designated zones.
Design Change:
The old MCI was famous for its unique crescent-shaped terminals where passengers could park close to their gate. The new terminal is a conventional centralized design, which means a longer walk from gates to the outdoor smoking area.
Kansas City Airport Smoking Policy
Missouri’s Clean Indoor Air Act prohibits smoking inside enclosed public places including airports. The new MCI terminal enforces a complete indoor smoking ban.
Plan approximately 30 to 40 minutes for the round trip from your gate to the outdoor smoking area and back through TSA security.
