Looking for a place to smoke at Indianapolis Airport? There is one critical thing every smoker needs to know: IND enforces a total smoking ban on the entire airport property — there are no designated smoking zones anywhere.
Smoking Ban at Indianapolis Airport
Indianapolis International has NO designated smoking areas — anywhere on airport property. The property-wide ban has been in effect since 2008, making IND one of the strictest airports for smokers in the entire United States.
This means there is nowhere on airport grounds where you can legally smoke. Not inside the terminal. Not outside the terminal. Not on the sidewalk. Not in the parking garage. Not at the curbside. The ban covers every square foot of airport property.
Colonel H. Weir Cook Terminal:
The award-winning terminal has two concourses (A and B) and a modern civic plaza design. There are no indoor or outdoor smoking areas in or around the terminal.
Outside the Terminal:
Unlike most US airports that allow smoking in designated outdoor zones, IND prohibits smoking everywhere on the property. The only option is to leave airport grounds entirely, which is impractical for most travelers.
Indianapolis Airport Smoking Policy
Indiana’s Smoke Free Air Law prohibits smoking inside all public places. IND goes further by banning smoking on the entire airport property, including all outdoor areas, sidewalks, roadways, and parking structures. The e-cigarette and vaping ban was expanded in 2019 to match the existing cigarette ban.
If you need to smoke, you must leave the airport property boundary. There are no practical options for travelers who have already entered the airport.
