Yes, you can smoke at Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) — on open-air terraces and courtyards after security in both the International and Domestic terminals, plus landside areas outside the entrances. Turkey’s 2009 ban on smoking in enclosed spaces means every area is outdoors, so there are no indoor smoking rooms.
Izmir’s Adnan Menderes Airport is the main gateway to Turkey’s Aegean coast, handling roughly 12–13 million passengers a year across a separate International Terminal and Domestic Terminal. Both terminals put their smoking areas after security, so transit and departing passengers can smoke without leaving the secure zone.
International Terminal
The International Terminal (the older of the two, opened in 2006) keeps its main airside smoking spot near Gate 233. After passport control and the second bag check, walk through the duty-free shop and look for the coffee shop by Gate 233 — it opens onto a small glass-walled open-air courtyard where smoking is allowed. Travellers also report an outdoor smoking lounge behind the Cakes & Bakes outlet in the same Gate 233 area, and a terrace reachable shortly after you clear security control.
Because these areas are open-air, they stay in use year-round despite Turkey’s indoor ban. They are compact, so expect them to be busy around peak international departures.
If you are still landside, there is an open-air courtyard on the international side after the initial bag check but before passport control, on the right-hand side of the hall — handy if you want a cigarette before joining the passport queue.
Domestic Terminal
The Domestic Terminal (opened 2014) has several open-air smoking terraces after the security checkpoint. There is one to the left of security near Gate 236 and another to the right near Gate 238, and a further terrace by Gate 242 — each paired with a small café serving snacks and drinks, so you can sit down between flights. Look for the “teras” signs in the departure concourse.
There is also a courtyard smoking area on the CIP floor, next to the CIP security checkpoint opposite the lounges. Access there is limited to Turkish Airlines business-class passengers and Star Alliance Gold members using the lounge; other passengers should use the Gate 236, 238 and 242 terraces.
All of these are open-air terraces rather than enclosed rooms, in line with the nationwide indoor-smoking rules.
Vaping
Turkey treats e-cigarettes the same way as tobacco, so vaping is not allowed inside the terminal building. Use the designated open-air smoking terraces and courtyards for both cigarettes and vapes. Note that the sale and import of vaping devices is restricted in Turkey — bring what you need for personal use and check the current rules before you travel.
