Thailand’s Tobacco Products Control Act B.E. 2560 (2017) prohibits smoking in all air-conditioned public spaces and within 5 meters of building entrances. All Thai airports enforce a strict indoor smoking ban. Smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor smoking areas, which are clearly marked at most airports. Fines for smoking in prohibited areas can reach 5,000 baht (approximately $140 USD). E-cigarettes, vaping devices, and all electronic nicotine delivery systems are completely banned in Thailand under a 2014 import ban. Possession of vaping devices can result in imprisonment of up to 10 years or fines up to 500,000 baht, and customs officials actively confiscate devices at airports.

Tips for Smokers at Chiang Mai International Airport
- Chiang Mai Airport is compact with a single terminal, making it easy to step outside for a smoke and return through security in about 15-20 minutes.
- The outdoor area on the departures level (Level 2) is the most convenient for departing passengers at CNX.
- E-cigarettes are illegal in Thailand. Chiang Mai’s proximity to Laos and Myanmar means customs checks can be thorough — do not carry vaping devices.
- Chiang Mai Airport is less crowded than Bangkok’s airports, so security re-screening is typically quick.
