Thailand’s Tobacco Products Control Act B.E. 2560 (2017) prohibits smoking in all air-conditioned public spaces and within 5 meters of building entrances. All Thai airports enforce a strict indoor smoking ban. Smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor smoking areas, which are clearly marked at most airports. Fines for smoking in prohibited areas can reach 5,000 baht (approximately $140 USD). E-cigarettes, vaping devices, and all electronic nicotine delivery systems are completely banned in Thailand under a 2014 import ban. Possession of vaping devices can result in imprisonment of up to 10 years or fines up to 500,000 baht, and customs officials actively confiscate devices at airports.
Travelers connecting from BKK to Singapore Changi Airport or Kuala Lumpur International Airport will find smoking areas available in the transit zones at both destinations.

Tips for Smokers at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport
- Bangkok Suvarnabhumi has enclosed smoking rooms after security in the concourse area, so you do not need to exit the secure zone for a smoke during layovers at BKK.
- The airside smoking rooms at BKK can be crowded during peak international departure times (late evening). Visit during off-peak hours for a more comfortable experience.
- Do NOT bring any e-cigarettes, vape pens, or heated tobacco devices to Thailand. They are completely illegal and customs officials at BKK actively confiscate them. Penalties include imprisonment.
- Cigarettes are available at duty-free shops in the departures area at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Thai cigarette brands are inexpensive by international standards.
- If using Bangkok’s other airport, Don Mueang (DMK), check our separate guide for its smoking area locations.
