Yes — you can smoke after security at Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS): the departure lounges near Gate 1 keep indoor smoking rooms, and you can also step outside the terminal to smoke landside before you go through security. DSS is more accommodating than most West African gateways.
Blaise Diagne International opened in December 2017 near Diass, about 45 km east of central Dakar, replacing the old Léopold Sédar Senghor airport as Senegal’s main gateway and the hub for Air Senegal. It is a modern single-terminal airport, and — unusually for the region — several of its airside lounges maintain dedicated smoking rooms.
Smoking Areas After Security
The sanctioned indoor smoking at DSS is inside the departure lounges on the airside boarding level, clustered near Gate 1:
- Odyssée Lounge — airside on the departure level near Gate 1, with a separate enclosed smoking room. Open to Priority Pass and LoungeKey members and paid walk-in guests.
- Salon Infinite — a lounge near Gate 1 that also has a smoking room, with a pay-at-the-door option for non-members.
- Salon Ultimate — the airport’s own website describes this as a smoking lounge (salon fumeur). Entry is a walk-in fee of around 35,000 FCFA (about €54) or free for Priority Pass, LoungeKey and eligible Amex and bank cardholders.
Because the smoking rooms sit inside these lounges, you need lounge access — a Priority Pass-type card or the walk-in charge — to use one. Once you are inside, you can smoke without leaving airside or re-clearing security, which makes a long layover far easier.
Landside and Before Security
If you are not buying lounge access, you can smoke in the open air outside the terminal building — on arrival before you check in, or after you collect your bags. There is no separately marked outdoor smoking area, so stand clear of the doorways and air intakes. Finish your cigarette outside before you pass through security if you do not plan to use a lounge.
Vaping
Senegal permits the sale of e-cigarettes with some restrictions, and there is no dedicated vaping room at DSS. Treat vaping like smoking — use it in the lounge smoking rooms or outside the terminal, not in the open concourse. Senegal’s 2014 anti-tobacco law bans smoking in enclosed public spaces except in designated areas, which is exactly what the lounge smoking rooms provide.
