Yes, you can smoke at Porto Airport (OPO / Francisco Sá Carneiro) — outdoors on the forecourt, in the designated areas outside the terminal doors, before security. The terminal building is entirely smoke-free with no airside or enclosed smoking room, so plan to light up landside before you check in.
Porto is Portugal’s second-busiest airport and the main gateway to the north of the country, running through a single modern terminal that serves TAP Air Portugal, Ryanair, easyJet and a wide spread of European low-cost and full-service flights.
Before Security (Landside)
This is the only place you can smoke at OPO. Step outside the terminal doors onto the forecourt — the covered pavement outside both the departures and arrivals levels — and use the designated outdoor areas there. Because it is landside, you have free access to it any time before you check in or clear security, and again after you collect your bags on arrival.
The official airport guidance is straightforward: smoking is forbidden inside the plane and inside the airport, and permitted only in the designated outdoor areas. Give yourself a few minutes to walk back in and rejoin the security queue after a cigarette.
After Security (Airside)
There is no smoking area past the checkpoint. Porto operates no airside smoking terrace and no enclosed smoking room anywhere in the departure lounge or at the gates, and the ANA lounge (level 3, near gates 31–32) has no smoking facility either. Once you are through security, the only way to smoke is to exit back to the landside forecourt and re-clear the checkpoint.
Worth knowing for comparison: Portuguese law does let airports run enclosed smoking rooms, and the enclosed smoking areas at Lisbon Airport (LIS) stay open airside; Porto has simply never operated one. That single fact is what makes OPO an outdoor-only, landside-only airport.
Vaping
Vaping is allowed in the same outdoor forecourt areas as smoking. E-cigarettes are treated exactly like cigarettes, so you cannot vape inside the terminal; use the designated outdoor areas before security instead. Carry your vape and any lighter in your hand baggage, per airport security rules.
Connecting Flights and Layovers
If Porto is a connection point, treat it as outdoor-only. With no airside facility, smoking during a layover means leaving the secure area, walking out to the forecourt, and passing back through security for your onward flight — so factor in extra time.
