Tocumen International Airport (PTY) is entirely smoke-free — there are no smoking areas anywhere on the property, neither airside in Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 nor landside at the entrances, car parks and pickup lanes. To smoke, you must clear immigration and leave the airport grounds entirely. The airport’s own published policy makes the whole site 100% smoke-free.

Tocumen is Panama’s main international gateway and the busiest passenger hub in Central America, built around Copa Airlines’ “Hub of the Americas” connecting bank. It runs two linked passenger terminals — the original Terminal 1 and the large Terminal 2, opened in 2022 — and both fall under the identical site-wide ban with no designated smoking room, lounge, or courtyard in either.

Terminal 1 and Terminal 2

Neither building has a smoking area after security. Whether your gate is in T1 or in the newer T2, the departures level, boarding gates, food court and airside corridors are all fully non-smoking, and the two terminals are joined by a connector so there is no outdoor break anywhere in between. The lounges — including the paid lounges in Terminal 2 — are air-conditioned and smoke-free, so a lounge pass does not buy you a place to light up.

Landside is treated the same way. The check-in halls, the curbside drop-off and arrivals lanes, and the parking structures are all covered by the ban, so there is no “step just outside the door” option the way there is at many airports.

Connecting Through PTY: The Copa Layover

For the transit passenger this is the answer that matters most. PTY is one of the Americas’ busiest connecting points, and a connection keeps you airside, where there is genuinely nowhere to smoke. To smoke you have to clear passport control, exit the airport, and re-enter through immigration and security afterward.

That round trip works when Panama’s entry requirements let you in, your baggage is handled through to your final destination, and your connection leaves enough time for two sets of queues — confirm all three with your airline before you count on it. Otherwise plan PTY as a “no smoking on this layover” airport and time your last cigarette before you land.

Vaping and E-Cigarettes

Vaping is barred everywhere smoking is, which at Tocumen means the entire site. In practice, a device stays packed away for the whole time you are at the airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a smoking area at Panama Tocumen Airport (PTY)?

Tocumen International Airport (PTY) is entirely smoke-free, with no designated smoking area anywhere — not after security in Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, and not landside at entrances, parking, or pickup zones.

Can I smoke after security (airside) at PTY?

Time your last cigarette before you land or enter the terminal — there is no airside smoking area in either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, and once you pass security the only way to smoke is to leave the airport entirely, which requires clearing immigration.

Where can I smoke at Tocumen Airport?

Smoking means leaving airport property: exit the terminal, walk out past the property line, and follow the local signage on where smoking is allowed. Tocumen bans smoking indoors and outdoors across the whole site.

Where is the nearest place to smoke at Tocumen Airport?

Off airport property, past immigration. Because the entire Tocumen site — terminals, entrances, car parks and pickup lanes — is smoke-free, you have to be beyond the airport perimeter, which means clearing passport control first, and then follow the local signage.

Can Copa Airlines connecting passengers smoke during a layover at PTY?

Step out of the airport and smoke beyond the property line, then return through immigration and security. PTY is Copa’s Hub of the Americas, and a connection otherwise keeps you airside, where there is no smoking area. Leaving works when Panama’s entry requirements, your baggage handling and your connection time allow it, so confirm all three with your airline before you count on it.

Can I vape at Panama Tocumen Airport?

Keep any device packed away for the whole time you are at the airport — vaping is banned everywhere smoking is at PTY, which means the entire site; Panama’s health rules prohibit e-cigarette use in terminals and transport. Full detail is in our Panama guide.
