Norway has strict tobacco laws, and although Norwegian airports historically kept indoor smoking rooms, Oslo Gardermoen does not provide one today. Smoking is confined to designated outdoor areas outside the terminal. Vaping is treated like tobacco, so the same rule applies.
For international travel through Norway, Oslo (OSL) is the airport that matters, as the largest in the country.
How Norwegian Airport Smoking Works
Norway’s Tobacco Control Act bans smoking in indoor public spaces, and Oslo Airport provides no indoor smoking room:
- No indoor airside smoking rooms anywhere — domestic, Schengen or non-Schengen
- Smoking is only at designated outdoor areas outside the terminal, landside
- E-cigarettes are treated like tobacco — vaping is banned indoors and on transport
- A smoking layover requires exiting the secure zone and re-clearing security
The Hub
Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL). Norway’s largest airport, operated by Avinor. There are no indoor smoking rooms after security — the only sanctioned option is outdoors, at designated areas outside the terminal building (kerbside). Airside passengers must clear passport control and security, smoke outside, then re-clear security, so a smoking layover is impractical on a tight connection.
Tips for Smokers at Norwegian Airports
- Oslo has no airside smoking room — plan to smoke before security or accept a no-smoking layover
- The smoking areas are outdoors, outside the terminal building, landside
- Don’t rely on an old “indoor smoking room” — Oslo doesn’t provide one airside
- Vaping is banned indoors too — outdoor designated areas only
