Nigeria allows designated airport smoking areas under its National Tobacco Control Act 2015, but in practice the smoking after security at the main hub is concentrated inside premium lounges rather than a public smoking room. The general terminal is smoke-free. Vaping, by contrast, is essentially unregulated in Nigeria.
For international travel through Nigeria, Lagos (LOS) is the airport that matters, as the busiest in West Africa.
How Nigerian Airport Smoking Works
The National Tobacco Control Act 2015 permits designated smoking areas at airports as an exception to the indoor ban:
- A designated smoking area must occupy no more than 10% of the premises, be ventilated, and not affect non-smoking areas
- At Lagos, the practical smoking-after-security option is a premium lounge with a smoking section (by pass)
- The general terminal is smoke-free; outdoor designated areas are landside
- Vaping is not restricted by Nigerian law in indoor public places
The Hub
Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS). Nigeria’s main gateway and the busiest in West Africa. In the international terminal (MMA1), some premium lounges (e.g. Skyway Premium, Gabfol) have designated smoking sections for lounge guests. The general terminal interior is smoke-free, and outdoor designated areas are available landside. The domestic terminals have no after-security smoking.
Tips for Smokers at Nigerian Airports
- Smoking after security at Lagos is lounge-dependent — a premium lounge with a smoking section is the realistic option
- The general terminal is smoke-free; smoke outdoors landside if you don’t have lounge access
- Vaping is not banned by Nigerian law, but never vape onboard
- Domestic terminals have no after-security smoking — plan to smoke before security
