Yes, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) has designated outdoor smoking areas, all of them before security. Schiphol closed its indoor smoking cabins in April 2020 to comply with Dutch tobacco law, so there is no smoking past the security checkpoint anywhere in the airport.
Before Security (Outdoor Only)
Jan Dellaertplein — the main spot
- The large square directly in front of Schiphol Plaza at the main terminal entrance.
- This is the principal designated smoking area; smoking spots are marked with white dotted lines and have ashtrays.
Departures level
- Additional marked outdoor smoking spots sit along the departures (set-down) level outside the hall entrances.
- Look for the same white-dotted-line markings and ashtrays.
Arrivals
- Step outside the arrivals exit on the ground level and use the marked area near the doors.
After Security
There is no smoking access airside. Departure Halls 1, 2 and 3, the gate lounges, and Holland Boulevard between the Schengen and non-Schengen piers are entirely smoke-free. To smoke during a layover you must exit to Schiphol Plaza and re-clear security (and passport control if non-Schengen), so allow plenty of time.
Terminal Layout
Schiphol is a single large terminal with one departures hall split into Departure Halls 1, 2 and 3 that feed a common set of piers (B-H). Because everything connects airside, the lack of an airside smoking area applies across all gates — the nearest cigarette is always landside at Jan Dellaertplein.
