Miami International Airport (MIA) is one of only three major US airports that still offers an indoor smoking option. Here’s everything you need to know about smoking at MIA, including the unique “open air” atrium that sets it apart from most American airports.
Smoking at Miami International Airport
As of 2025, Miami International Airport remains one of just three major US airports (along with Las Vegas and Nashville) that doesn’t have a 100% smoke-free indoor policy. MIA offers both an indoor smoking option and outdoor designated areas.
The Open-Air Atrium (Indoor Option)
The standout feature at MIA is the “open air” atrium where smoking is permitted. This unique space has four walls and a roof with a gap at the roofline, which technically qualifies it as an outdoor area under Florida law. The atrium is attached to the TGI Friday’s restaurant in the airport.
Important note: E-cigarettes are NOT permitted in the atrium - only traditional cigarettes are allowed in this space.
Outdoor Smoking Areas
Standard outdoor smoking areas are available at MIA:
Outside terminal entrances, before security checkpoints
Near arrivals and departures areas
Concourse D terrace
Must maintain 20 feet distance from doors
The outdoor areas are well-marked and located outside the terminal buildings.
E-Cigarette Policy
E-cigarettes and vaping devices are completely banned indoors at Miami International Airport - including in the open-air atrium. If you vape, you must use the standard outdoor smoking areas only.

The official Miami Airport website offers a smoking areas map PDF that shows all designated locations. It’s worth downloading before your trip, especially if you have a layover and want to know your options.
Remember that smoking in non-designated areas can result in fines and other penalties, so stick to the marked zones.
