Yes, you can smoke at Vientiane Wattay Airport (VTE) at designated outdoor areas located outside the terminal, on the landside before security.
Wattay International Airport is the main international gateway for Vientiane and Laos. The terminal’s indoor smoking rooms were closed on 20 May 2019, when the airport was declared smoke-free indoors, so all smoking now takes place outside the building.
Where to Smoke
Smoking at VTE is permitted only at the designated outdoor areas outside the terminal, on the landside before security. Lao law requires these areas to be outdoors and set back at least 10 metres from the building.
There is no smoking area after security and no indoor smoking room. Connecting passengers who have already passed security must exit the terminal and re-clear security to smoke outside.
Vaping
E-cigarettes and vapes are banned in Laos under a zero-tolerance policy that prohibits import, possession and use. Devices are confiscated at the airport and offenders may face fines or a short jail term, so do not bring them.
