Airport Layout

Terminal 4, designed by AECOM, opened in 2018 as Kuwait Airways’ dedicated terminal and now also serves the foreign carriers that moved across from Terminal 1 in June 2026, among them Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Etihad Airways, Gulf Air, flydubai and EgyptAir. Terminal 5 handles low-cost carrier Jazeera Airways and has its own check-in, security and boarding gates. Terminal 1, the older facility that once served the majority of international airlines, has been closed since 3 June 2026, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has announced no reopening date. The terminals are linked by shuttle services. A large new Terminal 2, designed by Foster+Partners, is under construction with a target opening in late 2026 and will increase the airport’s overall capacity significantly.

Smoking Rooms

Terminal 4 (Kuwait Airways)

The terminal operator lists two indoor smoking rooms, both airside and free to use: one beside the duty-free shop opposite Gate B5, and one on the second floor between gates D6 and D7. From passport control, turn right for the Gate B5 area. The same facilities page carries the notice “All Smoking rooms are closed”, which has stood there since 2021, so verify on arrival — check the gate signage or ask at the transit desk before you count on a break here. Terminal 5’s lounge room, below, is the provision that is confirmed in use.

Terminal 1 (Other Airlines)

Terminal 1 has been closed since 3 June 2026, so nothing inside it is in use. The international airlines that used to depart from here now check in and board at Terminal 4 — among them Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Etihad Airways, Gulf Air, flydubai and EgyptAir — whose two listed rooms carry the operator’s closure notice, so plan on Terminal 5’s Hayakom Lounge room or verify Terminal 4’s rooms on arrival.

Terminal 5 (Jazeera Airways)

Terminal 5’s smoking provision sits inside the Hayakom Lounge — the lounge Jazeera Airways renamed from the Pearl Lounge — which the airline places right after security, a short walk from the departure gates, and which lists a quiet smoking room among its facilities. Entry is on a pay-in basis and Priority Pass is accepted; the fee covers seating, complimentary hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks, and fast Wi-Fi. Jazeera Business Class passengers travelling to Cairo walk in at no extra charge. It is the only smoking area in Terminal 5, so allow time to get into the lounge at peak departure banks.

Landside

Outdoor smoking is possible outside the terminal buildings, away from the entrances. Kuwait’s extreme summer temperatures make this genuinely uncomfortable from May to October, and most passengers prefer to use the airside indoor rooms.
