Smoking at Tokyo-Yokohama Narita International Airport – NRT

Yes, Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) has indoor smoking rooms in all three terminals, before and after security. The airport’s own terminal map marks 41 of them — 19 in Terminal 1, 16 in Terminal 2 and 6 in Terminal 3 — and about half sit past security beside the gates: in four of Terminal 1’s five satellites, by Gates 66 and 74 and in the Satellite at Terminal 2, and by the bus gates and on the international departure level at Terminal 3. Smoking anywhere else, inside or outside the buildings, is prohibited.

Smoking Rooms at Narita Airport

Narita’s rule is simple: smoking is prohibited both inside and outside the passenger terminals except in the designated smoking areas, and the airport says smoking rooms are available throughout each terminal. They are enclosed, ventilated rooms, free to use, on the arrival and departure floors of every terminal and in the gate areas past security. The list below follows the airport’s own terminal map, which marks every room by floor; the counts are the map’s as of October 2026.

Terminal 1 Smoking Locations

Terminal 1 has its international departure gates on 3F in five satellites — No.1 and No.2 on the North Wing, No.3, No.4 and No.5 on the South Wing — its departure lobby and check-in on 4F, arrivals on 1F and restaurants on 4F and 5F. The map marks 19 smoking rooms.

After security, in the international departure gate area (3F unless stated):

• No.2 Satellite, by Gates 21–22 — labelled Ploom Lounge on the map
• Central building, 3F shopping street, nearest Gate 27 — among the tax-free shops, labelled glo lounge on the map
• No.3 Satellite, by Gates 34–35 — labelled Ploom Lounge on the map
• No.4 Satellite, by Gates 41–42
• No.5 Satellite, by Gates 55–56
• No.5 Satellite, by Gates 57A–57B

The map marks no room in the No.1 Satellite (Gates 11–18); from there the nearest are the No.2 Satellite’s and the central building’s. The three brand lounges are listed by the airport as smoking areas like the rest.

Before security:

• 1F, arrivals level: three rooms — by the South Wing and North Wing arrival lobbies and in the central building
• 4F, departure level: five rooms — two in the South Wing departure lobby near the international departures entrances, one in the North Wing departure lobby, and two on the central building’s restaurant and shop floor
• 5F, restaurant floor: three rooms in the central building

Terminal 2 Smoking Locations

Terminal 2 is a main building and a Satellite joined by a walkway. International gates are on 3F — 61–68 in the main building’s east wing, 71–75 in its west wing and 81–99 in the Satellite — with the departure lobby also on 3F, arrivals on 1F and the restaurants and observation decks on 4F. The map marks 16 rooms.

After security:

Before security:

• 1F, arrivals level: three rooms — one by the arrival lobby’s central exit, two at the north end near the bus stops
• 2F: one room on the level that leads to the P-2 and P-3 car parks
• 3F, departure lobby: two rooms, near the north and south international departures entrances
• 4F: two rooms, by the north and south observation decks on the restaurant floor

Terminal 3 Smoking Locations

Terminal 3 is the low-cost terminal, reached from Terminal 2 on foot along the access corridor or by the free terminal shuttle bus. Check-in, the food court and the domestic and international security checks are on 2F, the international departure gates on 3F, the domestic gates in the Satellite, the bus gates on 1F and 2F, and arrivals on 1F. The map marks six rooms.

After security:

• 2F, by bus Gates 160A–160D — the departure bus-gate lounge, used for international or domestic flights depending on the time of day
• Satellite, 2F, by Gates 174–175 — the domestic departure gate area
• 3F, international departure gate area — two rooms: one beside the café and souvenir shops, one by the teppanyaki restaurant and the drugstore at the southern end, above the 150 bus gates

Before security:

• 2F, departure lobby, by the food court — a few steps from the domestic security entrance
• 1F, arrival lobby

Smoking on a Layover at Narita Airport

Every terminal has rooms past security, so once you are in the departure gate area you never need to leave it to smoke. Connecting passengers pass a security check for connecting passengers on the way into the departure gate area, and every room listed above as after security is beyond that check. In Terminal 1, the No.2, No.3, No.4 and No.5 Satellites and the central building’s 3F shopping street have rooms; from the No.1 Satellite, walk to the No.2 Satellite’s or the central building’s. In Terminal 2, the rooms by Gates 66 and 74, the two in the Satellite, the Japan Food Hall and the Sky Lounge walkway are all inside the international departure area. In Terminal 3, use the 3F rooms or the one by the 160 bus gates. If your connection changes terminal, allow for the transfer first and smoke in the terminal you depart from.

Before Security and Outdoors

Arriving passengers have rooms on the 1F arrivals level of all three terminals, and departing passengers have rooms in every departure lobby before the security checks. Outside, the no-smoking rule applies around the buildings too; the only marked area outdoors on the airport’s map is at the P-1 surface car park in front of Terminal 1.

Vaping

Heated-tobacco devices and e-cigarettes go to the same designated smoking rooms as cigarettes, as at other Japanese airports; the airport marks no separate vaping area. Three of Terminal 1’s airside rooms are heated-tobacco brand lounges on the airport’s map — Ploom Lounge by Gates 21–22 and 34–35, a glo lounge in the central building — and the airport lists them as smoking areas like the rest.
