Yes, you can smoke at Kumamoto Airport (KMJ) — in the smoking room on the 1F lobby of the passenger terminal, in the airside boarding waiting area on 3F after security, or in a separate smoking area at the nearby Sorayoka Area visitor centre.
Passenger Terminal Building
Kumamoto Airport’s official smoking-area page lists two rooms in the passenger terminal:
- 1F Lobby — landside, open 6:30 to 21:30
- 3F Boarding waiting area — airside, past security, open from 6:30 to the last domestic departure and through international flight operating hours
The terminal itself is a newly built, wood-framed building that opened in March 2023, replacing the structure damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.
Sorayoka Area
In October 2024 the airport opened the Sorayoka Area, a dining, park and visitor-centre complex just east of the passenger terminal building that anyone — not only ticketed passengers — can visit. The airport’s own smoking-area listing names a smoking area at the visitor centre, open 7:30 to 21:30, without describing its construction; it’s a useful option if you’re spending time on the landside grounds before check-in or picking someone up. The airport’s listing does not name an outdoor smoking spot anywhere on its grounds — every location it lists, including this one, is treated as a designated smoking area rather than open-air.
Vaping and Heated Tobacco
Kumamoto Airport’s own smoking-area listing does not publish a separate rule for e-cigarettes or heated tobacco; use one of the three designated smoking areas — the 1F lobby, the 3F boarding waiting area, or the Sorayoka Area visitor centre — rather than vaping in the open terminal.
