Yes, Rome Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) lets you smoke both airside — in enclosed smoking booths near the gates after security — and at outdoor areas before security. Italy bans indoor smoking, so the airside facilities are sealed glass cabins rather than open lounges.
Airside (After Security and Passport Control)
Fiumicino keeps several enclosed smoking booths and cabins past security across its boarding areas:
- Gate A area — a larger, refurbished smoking area around Gates A1-A3, plus booths beside Gate A5. This is the main international concourse.
- Boarding Area E — smoking booths near the gates (around the E1-E8 and E14 areas, including one behind the duty-free shop).
- Near the British Airways lounge — a larger smoking area, with smaller cubicles also reported near other gates.
- Mezzanine boarding areas — smoking lounges have been noted on the upper level.
These are small sealed cabins, so expect a brief wait when the airport is busy.
Before Security (Landside)
Indoor smoking is banned throughout the terminal, so landside smoking is outdoors only:
- Designated outdoor areas with ashtrays and bins outside each terminal entrance on the departures level.
- Outdoor seating areas around the terminal forecourt and near the train station.
Terminal Layout
Fiumicino’s passenger operation runs mainly through Terminal 1 (Schengen and some international, includes Boarding Area A/B) and Terminal 3 (international and intercontinental, includes Boarding Areas D/E/G). Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are connected airside, so once through security you can reach the booths across the boarding areas.
