Kozhikode’s Calicut International Airport — also known as Karipur Airport — sits atop a tabletop plateau in the hills of North Kerala, making it one of India’s most dramatic approaches. CCJ is a major gateway for the enormous Keralite diaspora in the Gulf states, with heavy traffic to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat, and Kuwait. If you are a smoker catching a red-eye to the Middle East or arriving back from a Gulf posting, here is what you need to know about lighting up at this airport.
Inside Terminals
Calicut Airport does not have any confirmed indoor smoking rooms or enclosed cabins. The terminal building is relatively compact — it handles both domestic and international flights from a single structure, and the airside area beyond security is limited in space. There are no reports from travelers of finding a dedicated smoking enclosure after screening. This is consistent with many smaller Indian airports that simply do not have the footprint to accommodate separate smoking rooms with proper ventilation. Do not rely on finding an indoor option here.
Outside Terminals
Outdoor smoking is your primary option at CCJ. Designated areas are located near the main terminal entrance and around the parking lot. The approach road and drop-off area also have spots where passengers smoke, though you should stick to the marked zones. If you are arriving on an international flight and clearing customs, step outside the arrivals exit and look for signage near the far end of the building. The parking area in front of the terminal is the most relaxed spot for a cigarette, especially if you have someone picking you up and can spare a few minutes.
Keep in mind that Kozhikode’s weather is tropical year-round — warm and humid with heavy monsoon rains from June through September. The outdoor areas have limited cover, so during monsoon season your smoke break will be a wet one.
Tips for Smokers at Calicut Airport
- Smoke before entering the terminal. Once you clear security at CCJ, there is no confirmed indoor or outdoor smoking spot on the airside.
- If you are arriving from a Gulf flight late at night, the outdoor areas near the arrivals exit are quiet and easy to use. Just stay in the designated zones.
- Buy cigarettes in town before heading to the airport. The shops inside CCJ’s terminal have limited stock, and international brands are not always available.
- Monsoon season (June to September) means heavy rain at Karipur. If you need to smoke outside during this period, bring an umbrella or be prepared to get drenched.
- All vaping devices are banned in India. Do not pack them in carry-on or checked luggage when flying through Calicut Airport.
India Smoking Regulations
Under India’s Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, smoking is prohibited in all public places except designated zones. At airports like CCJ, this means you can only smoke in marked areas — lighting up elsewhere can result in a Rs 200 spot fine. Smoking zones must be located at least 10 feet from building entrances. E-cigarettes have been entirely outlawed since 2019 under a separate act, and carrying a vaping device through any Indian airport risks confiscation and legal trouble.
