Yes, you can smoke at Rhodes International Airport “Diagoras” (RHO) — at designated outdoor areas outside the terminal, landside. The terminal building is smoke-free and there is no airside smoking area, so smoke before you head upstairs to security, or after you exit on arrival.
Rhodes Diagoras is the Dodecanese island’s main gateway and one of Greece’s busiest seasonal airports, handling close to seven million passengers a year — the great majority of them summer charter and holiday flights from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. Everything runs through a single passenger terminal, so once you know where the outdoor spots are the layout is simple.
Before Security (Landside)
Smoking at RHO is outdoors only, at the marked areas outside the terminal building. The practical routine most departing passengers follow is to check in and drop bags on the ground floor first, then step outside to smoke before going up to passport control and security.
The ground-floor café has outdoor seating by the forecourt, and this is where many smokers settle with a coffee and a cigarette before their flight. The open frontage outside the departures entrance, around the drop-off lanes and taxi rank, is the other easy spot. Look for the ashtrays and bins that mark the designated areas.
Give yourself a few minutes here, because there is no chance to smoke again once you are through to the gates.
After Security (Airside)
There is no smoking area after security at Rhodes Airport. Once you clear the security lanes and passport control and move up into the departures hall and the 18 gates, the whole airside is smoke-free — there is no smoking room, terrace or open-air deck.
For a connecting passenger this matters: to smoke between flights you would have to leave the secure zone, go back outside to the landside areas, and then re-clear security and passport control for your onward flight. On busy summer days those queues can be long, so it is usually easier to have your last cigarette landside before you go through.
Arrivals
Arriving passengers are quickly back in the open air. After baggage reclaim, step out of the arrivals exit and you can smoke at the outdoor areas along the frontage, by the taxi rank and bus stops, while you sort out your transfer or hire car.
Vaping
Greece treats e-cigarettes and vapes like tobacco, so vaping is not allowed inside the terminal. Use the same designated outdoor areas outside the building for both vapes and cigarettes. Heat-not-burn devices such as IQOS are treated the same way — outdoors only.
