Yes, Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has a small indoor smoking cabin past the security checkpoint inside Terminal 2. Outdoor smoking areas are also available on Terminal 1’s departures level (Level E2) and arrivals level (Level E0), and outside Terminal 2. The T2 cabin is the only post-security smoking option at BER — Terminal 1 has no airside smoking facilities.
Terminal 1
- Outdoor smoking areas on the departures level (Level E2) near the entrance
- Additional smoking areas on the arrivals level (Level E0) outside the exit doors
- No post-security smoking — you must smoke before entering the checkpoint
Terminal 2
- Small indoor smoking cabin past the security checkpoint — the only airside smoking option at BER
- Outdoor smoking area outside the terminal entrance for landside smokers
- Terminal 2 is the smaller terminal used primarily by low-cost carriers
The T2 post-security cabin was confirmed in April 2026 by a traveller in our Airport Smoking community (see Community Tips below). It is described as a small room, so expect limited capacity during busy periods and short waits at peak hours.
Outside Terminals
- Designated outdoor areas with ashtrays and cigarette bins are clearly marked with signage
- A covered area near the bus stops on Level E0 provides some weather protection
Germany Smoking Regulations
Germany’s Federal Non-Smokers’ Protection Act (Bundesnichtraucherschutzgesetz) of 2007 bans smoking in all federal buildings and public transport. However, airports fall under state jurisdiction, and most German airports maintain designated indoor smoking cabins (Raucherkabinen) operated by companies like Smoke Free. These glass-enclosed, ventilated cabins are found before and after security in most terminals. Smoking outside is permitted in designated areas at least 5 meters from entrances. E-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (IQOS) are generally allowed in the same smoking areas. Fines for smoking in non-designated areas range from €5 to €1,000 depending on the state.
Tips for Smokers at Berlin Brandenburg Airport
- If you are flying through Terminal 2, use the indoor smoking cabin past security — it is the only post-security smoking option at BER.
- Terminal 1 has no airside smoking, so plan your last smoke before entering the T1 security checkpoint.
- The outdoor areas on the departures level (Level E2) of Terminal 1 are the most convenient for landside smokers.
- Allow at least 30 minutes if you need to exit security at Terminal 1, smoke outside, and re-clear the checkpoint, especially during morning rush hours.
- Berlin’s winters are cold, so dress warmly if you plan to use outdoor areas at BER between November and March.
