Yes, Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has indoor smoking cabins (Raucherkabinen) airside in Terminal 1, after the security checkpoint, near gates A02, A38, B30/31 and C01. Since almost all flights at BER depart from Terminal 1, most passengers can smoke during a layover without leaving the secure zone. Outdoor smoking areas are also marked near the entrances of both terminals.
Airport Layout
Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), named after former chancellor Willy Brandt, opened in October 2020 and replaced the city’s old Tegel and Schönefeld airports. It is built around one large main terminal, Terminal 1, with piers A, B, C and D, plus the smaller adjacent Terminal 2 used mainly by low-cost carriers such as easyJet. Terminal 5 (the former Schönefeld building) is currently closed. The vast majority of departures use Terminal 1.
Smoking Cabins After Security (Terminal 1)
Terminal 1 has several enclosed, ventilated smoking cabins located airside, past the security checkpoint:
- Gate A02 — opens depending on flight times
- Gate A38 — open 24/7
- Gate B02 — opens depending on flight times
- Gates B30/31 — open 24/7
- Gate C01 — opens depending on flight times
The cabins are small glass-enclosed booths with extractor fans, so expect limited capacity and short waits at peak hours. The A38 and B30/31 cabins are the most reliable as they run around the clock.
Outdoor Smoking Areas
- Terminal 1 — designated outdoor areas with ashtrays near the entrances on the departures level (E2) and arrivals level (E0)
- Terminal 2 — an outdoor smoking area near the terminal entrance
Terminal 2 has no indoor airside smoking, so passengers flying from T2 should use the outdoor areas before clearing security.
