There is something fitting about Xiamen’s reputation as a garden city — one of the cleanest, most livable places in China, with coastal air that actually smells fresh and streets lined with banyan trees. That emphasis on clean living extends to Gaoqi International Airport, where indoor smoking has been off the table since 2016. The good news is that Xiamen’s mild subtropical climate makes the outdoor-only situation far less painful than at airports further north.
Terminal 3 (Domestic) Smoking Areas
T3 handles all domestic flights and is the busier of the two terminals. Once past security there is no place to smoke. Outdoor smoking areas are near the ground-level entrance on the arrivals side — step outside, walk a short distance from the doors, and look for marked zones with standing ashtrays. The departures level upstairs also has outdoor areas near the drop-off lane, though less clearly marked.
Terminal 4 (International) Smoking Areas
T4 opened in 2018 and serves international flights plus routes to Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Xiamen Airlines uses it as a hub for Southeast Asian connections to Manila, Bangkok, and Singapore. Outdoor smoking areas follow the same pattern as T3 — ground-level near the arrivals exit. T4 is more compact, so you are never more than a few minutes’ walk from outside.
Before Security / Landside
Both terminals share the same approach: smoking happens outside the building. After landing, walk through arrivals and out the doors. Before departure, smoke in the designated outdoor zone then head inside. The two terminals are connected by a covered walkway — no bus needed, but no smoking zones along the walkway itself.
Tips for Smokers at Xiamen Airport
- Xiamen’s subtropical climate means outdoor smoking is comfortable most of the year, with only the June-August rainy season posing real inconvenience
- The airport sits on a narrow peninsula — taxi rides to the city center take 20-30 minutes if you want to explore during a long layover
- Fujian tea culture is everywhere, and the tea shops outside the airport are worth a visit before your flight
- Do not try to carry a lighter through security — buy one at a convenience shop outside or at your destination
How China Handles Airport Smoking
China shut down every indoor smoking room in its airports during 2016 as part of broader public health legislation. Xiamen Gaoqi was no exception. The ban covers cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and e-cigarettes equally, applying to every indoor space including lounges, restaurants, and corridors. Smoking is permitted only in designated outdoor zones, and fines for violating the policy are issued on the spot.
