Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport is Xinjiang’s main hub and a gateway between western China and Central Asia, handling roughly 29 million passengers a year. On 17 April 2025 the airport consolidated all passenger flights into a vast new Terminal 4 in the North Area — the old T1, T2 and T3 closed the same day — and the airport was renamed from Ürümqi Diwopu to Ürümqi Tianshan. Terminal 4 Smoking Rooms (After Security)
Terminal 4 is now the airport’s single passenger terminal — a huge building with a central hall and three parallel concourses reaching out to the gates. Ürümqi has run indoor airside smoking rooms for years: the older terminals kept four of them (near T1’s Gate 1, T2’s Gate 98, and T3’s Gates 26 and 35), and the airport has carried indoor smoking rooms into Terminal 4 after the 2025 move. You can smoke past security without leaving the secure zone.
The rooms sit off the departure concourses, near the gates. Exact gate positions in the new terminal are still settling, so the surest way to find one is to follow the smoking-room pictogram on the concourse signage, or ask at an information desk for the nearest room. The most reliable smoke at URC is before you enter Terminal 4. Designated outdoor smoking areas sit along the curbside at the terminal’s departures and arrivals entrances, landside. Arriving passengers can light up a short walk from the exit doors; departing passengers should smoke at the entrance before check-in and security. Ürümqi’s continental desert climate means these areas are bitterly cold in winter and hot in summer, so time your outdoor break accordingly — and note that stepping outside after security means re-clearing screening to get back in.

Vaping
China has regulated e-cigarettes under a state tobacco monopoly since November 2022, and only tobacco-flavour vapes are sold legally. At the airport, vaping is treated the same as smoking, so use the designated smoking areas — the airside rooms in Terminal 4 or the outdoor zones at the entrances — rather than vaping at the gate.
