Chengdu Tianfu is the airport China built for the future. Opened in June 2021, it made Chengdu only the third city in the world — alongside Shanghai and Beijing — to operate two major international airports simultaneously. The twin terminals are shaped after the ancient Shu civilization’s golden Sunbird, and they look spectacular from the air. What they do not contain, however, is anywhere to smoke indoors.

Terminal 1 Smoking Zones

Terminal 1 handles a mix of domestic and international traffic. The building is massive, modern, and entirely smoke-free inside. To smoke, you need to exit the terminal at ground level. Outdoor designated zones are situated near the arrivals exit and along the curbside departure drop-off area on the upper level. The architecture is open and airy near the entrances, so the smoking zones are reasonably easy to spot once you step outside — look for the signage with the cigarette pictogram.

Terminal 2 Smoking Zones

Terminal 2 mirrors the layout concept of Terminal 1 with similar outdoor smoking arrangements. Designated zones sit near the departure entrance on the upper curbside and the arrivals hall exit at ground level. Because Tianfu is still ramping up to full capacity, Terminal 2 tends to be quieter than Terminal 1 on most days, which means shorter security lines if you need to step out and come back through.

Before Security / Landside

The landside approach at Tianfu is all glass, steel, and polished floors — distinctly 21st century. Before entering security or after collecting your bags, head to the curbside zone outside the terminal doors. The airport’s remote location 50 kilometers from downtown means most passengers arrive by metro or car, and the drop-off areas have breathing room compared to the cramped curbsides at older Chinese airports.

Tips for Smokers at Chengdu Tianfu Airport

  • Tianfu was built after the 2016 indoor smoking ban — the architects never even planned for smoking rooms, so do not waste time searching inside
  • The airport is enormous and still growing; walking from a remote gate to the terminal exit can take 15-20 minutes each way
  • Metro Line 18 from central Chengdu takes about an hour — have your last smoke before boarding the train if you are cutting it close
  • Security re-screening is relatively efficient here compared to older Chinese airports, but still budget 30 minutes during peak periods
  • Signage throughout the airport is bilingual Chinese-English, making the outdoor smoking zones easier to locate than at many regional Chinese airports

Smoking Rules in China

Every airport terminal in mainland China has been smoke-free indoors since 2016 under national tobacco control legislation. Tianfu, built five years after the ban, was designed from the ground up with no indoor smoking infrastructure whatsoever. Municipal fines for smoking inside range from 500 to 2,000 yuan. E-cigarettes and heated tobacco products are subject to identical restrictions — China’s tobacco regulations make no distinction between combustible and electronic nicotine delivery. Your only option at TFU is the marked outdoor zones beyond the terminal doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there indoor smoking rooms at Chengdu Tianfu Airport?

No. Despite being one of China’s newest airports, Tianfu has zero indoor smoking facilities. The national ban on indoor airport smoking has been in effect since 2016, and TFU was designed entirely without smoking rooms.

Where are the smoking zones at Chengdu Tianfu Airport?

Designated outdoor smoking zones are located near the entrance areas of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 on the departures and arrivals levels. Follow signage toward the terminal exits to reach the marked outdoor areas.

How far is Chengdu Tianfu Airport from the city center?

Tianfu is roughly 50 kilometers southeast of central Chengdu. The metro Line 18 connects the airport to the city, but the ride takes about an hour. Factor this distance into your travel plans, especially if you were expecting to smoke closer to the city before heading to the airport.

Can I smoke between flights at Tianfu Airport during a layover?

Only if you exit the secure area completely. All smoking zones are outside the terminal buildings, meaning you will need to clear immigration (for international flights) or exit security, smoke outdoors, and then re-enter. Allow at least 45-60 minutes for this at a minimum.
