Sanya is the undisputed beach capital of China, perched at the southern tip of Hainan Island with Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay, and the towering Nanshan Temple drawing millions of domestic tourists escaping winter up north. Phoenix International Airport sits just minutes from the resort strip, and during peak season from October through April it buzzes with holidaymakers. If you are among them and need a cigarette, the situation is simple but limited — everything happens outdoors.
Terminal Smoking Areas
SYX has a single terminal building. It is not enormous by Chinese standards, which works in your favor when you need to get outside for a smoke and back through security without missing your flight. But make no mistake: there is nothing inside. No smoking rooms tucked behind a lounge, no ventilated cabins near the gates, no hidden corners where anyone looks the other way. The 2016 ban is enforced.
The designated outdoor smoking area on the departure level is near the main entrance. Walk out through the front doors and head to the right — you will find a marked spot along the curbside before the taxi queue. It is open-air with no overhead shelter, which in Sanya’s climate is rarely a problem except during summer rain squalls.
On the arrivals level, there is another outdoor spot shortly after you exit baggage claim. Step outside and move to the right of the exit doors.
Before Security / Landside
All smoking at SYX happens on the landside. If you have not yet cleared security, the departure-level outdoor area is your best bet. If you have already gone through security and are sitting at your gate, the only way to smoke is to leave the secure zone entirely, step outside, and then go back through screening.
During the October-to-April high season, Sanya gets extremely busy with domestic charter groups and package tourists. Security lines can stretch longer than you expect at a single-terminal airport, so give yourself at least 25-30 minutes for the exit-smoke-return cycle during holidays.
Tips for Smokers at Sanya Airport
- Peak season crowds (Chinese New Year especially) can turn a quick smoke break into a 40-minute ordeal due to security re-screening — plan accordingly
- The tropical heat and humidity are intense from May through September; standing outside smoking in 34°C with 85% humidity is not pleasant, so keep it brief
- Sanya’s airport is close to the resort areas, so if you have time before your flight, smoking at your hotel is far more comfortable than at the airport
- Disposable lighters are fine through security; fuel lighters get confiscated
- There are no covered shelters at the outdoor smoking spots, so a sudden tropical downpour means you are getting wet
China’s Airport Smoking Ban
Since 2016, smoking has been prohibited inside all airport buildings across mainland China. Sanya enforces this like every other Chinese airport — no exceptions, no workarounds, no premium lounges with smoking sections. Penalties for indoor smoking can reach ¥2,000. E-cigarettes and vapes are subject to the same outdoor-only restriction. The ban covers the entire terminal interior including restrooms, restaurants, and VIP lounges.
