Beijing Daxing International Airport is the kind of building that makes you stop and stare. Zaha Hadid’s final major project opened in September 2019 — a vast starfish-shaped terminal that sits 46km south of central Beijing and looks like it was designed for a civilization a few centuries ahead of ours. It is stunning, efficient, and absolutely massive. For smokers, that last part is the problem. PKX has never had indoor smoking rooms (it opened three years after China’s ban), and the sheer distances inside this building make a smoke break a genuine logistical decision.
Terminal Layout and Smoking Zones
Daxing has a single enormous terminal with four concourses radiating outward like the arms of a starfish. Gates are spread across these concourses, and the furthest ones sit roughly 600 meters from the central hub. Outdoor smoking areas are located near the main terminal entrance on the departures level (Level 4), where you will find designated spots along the curbside. On the ground floor, additional outdoor areas sit near the arrivals exits.
The catch is getting there. If your gate is at the tip of one of the concourses, you are looking at a 10-15 minute walk just to reach the central hall, then another few minutes to exit the building. Add security re-screening on the way back — 20-40 minutes depending on the queue — and a single cigarette can cost you close to an hour.
Before Security / Landside
Your best opportunity to smoke at Daxing is before you enter the terminal. The departures curbside on Level 4 has designated outdoor areas near the main entrance. If you are arriving by the Daxing Airport Express metro line (which connects to central Beijing in about 20 minutes), step outside before heading to check-in. After landing, the arrivals level exits on the ground floor offer quick access to outdoor areas — much easier than trying to smoke during a layover.
Tips for Smokers at Beijing Daxing Airport
- Daxing’s design prioritizes everything except convenience for smokers. If you know you will want to smoke, try to arrive at the airport early enough for a break before entering security. Once inside, you are committed.
- The airport’s roof is a single continuous structure with massive skylights, which gives the interior a bright, open feeling — but do not be fooled, it is fully enclosed. There are no outdoor terraces or balconies accessible from the gate areas.
- Beijing’s air quality varies dramatically by season. Winter brings cold, dry air and occasional smog; summer is hot and humid. Spring sandstorms from the Gobi Desert can make outdoor smoking genuinely unpleasant in March and April.
- Daxing is a Skyteam and oneworld hub — China Southern, China Eastern, and several international carriers operate here. If you are connecting from PKX to Beijing Capital (PEK), the two airports are about 70km apart with no direct link, so do not mix them up on your booking.
- Disposable lighters pass through PKX security without issues. Fuel lighters and torch lighters will be confiscated.
Smoking Rules in Beijing
Beijing’s municipal anti-smoking ordinance (effective June 2015) is among China’s strictest. Smoking is prohibited in all indoor public spaces, workplaces, and public transport — including every square meter inside Daxing’s terminal. Fines for individuals can reach ¥200, and the airport actively enforces the rules with security patrols. The national 2016 airport smoking ban adds another layer on top of Beijing’s city law, making PKX one of the most firmly non-smoking airport environments in Asia.
