Hangzhou has transformed itself from a city known for West Lake and green tea into the tech capital of China’s east coast. Alibaba built its empire here, the 2022 Asian Games put new infrastructure everywhere, and the airport has kept pace with a gleaming Terminal 4 that opened in 2024 to handle growing international demand. But no amount of modernity changes the ground rules for smokers — at HGH, as at every Chinese airport, you are heading outside.
Terminal 4 Smoking Areas (International)
Terminal 4 is the showpiece. Opened in 2024 with a soaring roof design, it handles all international flights and represents Hangzhou’s ambitions as a global gateway. The building is entirely smoke-free inside, but outdoor designated areas are located near the departures entrance on the upper curbside level and outside the arrivals exit at ground level. Signage in T4 is modern and bilingual, so finding the smoking zones is more straightforward here than at the older terminals. The building is large but well-organized, and reaching the exit from most gates takes under 15 minutes.
Terminal 3 Smoking Areas (Domestic)
Terminal 3 is the workhorse for domestic travel and handles the heaviest passenger volumes. Outdoor smoking areas are near the main departure entrance and along the arrivals curbside. This terminal gets crowded, particularly during morning rush hours when business travelers flood the Yangtze River Delta shuttle routes to Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Security re-screening here is where you will lose the most time, so plan accordingly.
Terminal 1 and Landside
Terminal 1 serves budget domestic carriers and sees lighter traffic. Its compact size means the walk from gate to exit is short — probably the most efficient smoke break of the three terminals. For any terminal, the landside approach is identical: step outside the doors, find the designated zone, and light up. Hangzhou’s climate runs hot and humid in summer, cold and damp in winter, so neither extreme is ideal for standing outdoors, but spring and autumn are genuinely pleasant.
Tips for Smokers at Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport
- The three terminals are not adjacent — if you are connecting between T3 domestic and T4 international, allow extra transit time on top of any smoke break
- Hangzhou summers bring temperatures above 35C with oppressive humidity; winter hovers near freezing with persistent drizzle — spring and fall are the comfortable months for outdoor smoking
- T4 is brand new with efficient security processing, but T3 queues during peak domestic hours can test your patience
- Disposable lighters pass through HGH security; fuel lighters are confiscated at the checkpoint
- The airport metro connection (Line 1) runs into downtown Hangzhou and takes about an hour — have your last smoke before boarding if you are on a tight schedule
China Indoor Smoking Ban
Hangzhou was actually ahead of the national curve on tobacco control. The city passed its own strict smoking ordinance before the nationwide 2016 airport ban took effect, and local enforcement has a reputation for being thorough. Fines for indoor smoking at Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport can reach 2,000 yuan under Zhejiang provincial regulations. The ban covers the entirety of every terminal interior — gates, lounges, restaurants, restrooms, corridors, and the new T4 in its entirety. E-cigarettes and heated tobacco products are treated identically to combustible cigarettes. No indoor alternatives exist at HGH, period.
