Yes, you can smoke at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) — in designated, signed outdoor smoking areas outside the Main Terminal, on the Departures (Level 3) and Arrivals (Level 2) curbs. All of them are landside (before security). The terminal is smoke- and vape-free inside, at all times and for all substances, and no gate pier has an airside smoking room.
Level 3 Departures — Main Terminal
The best-known smoking area sits on the Level 3 departures curb, on the domestic side of the Main Terminal — a marked designated outdoor smoking area a short walk from the check-in doors. Domestic and international check-in share Level 3, so this is the handiest spot whichever flight you are on: step outside, stay within the marked area, and head back in to security. Further signed outdoor areas sit along the terminal entrances on the curbsides.
YVR is on Sea Island in the City of Richmond, whose bylaw sets a 9-metre setback from doors, windows and air intakes — stricter than the 6-metre province-wide rule in British Columbia; the marked areas already account for this, so simply stay inside the signed area.
Level 2 Arrivals — Main Terminal
After landing, exit the terminal at the Arrivals level (Level 2). At International Arrivals, travellers report the marked smoking spot in the small landscaped garden between the terminal exit and the parkade — convenient if you are heading to parking or a rental car. At Domestic Arrivals, use the signed areas outside the entrance doors on the curb.
US Preclearance — Smoke Before Pier E
YVR is a US preclearance airport: on most US-bound flights you clear US Customs and Border Protection at YVR, before boarding from Pier E. This creates a one-way trap for smokers — beyond preclearance there is nothing, and coming back out means re-clearing both US customs and security screening. Make the Level 3 curb your last stop before you join the preclearance queue. On the cannabis side, it is illegal under US law to carry cannabis to the border or to arrive under its influence, so keep it well away from Pier E.
Connecting at YVR
The Main Terminal runs Domestic on Piers A, B and C, International on Pier D, and US transborder on Pier E — none has an airside smoking area. To smoke between flights, exit the secure area (clearing Canadian immigration first on an international arrival), use the outdoor areas, then re-clear screening; YVR’s official policy is that travellers who leave secured areas undergo standard security and customs checks before re-entering. Budget a comfortable margin — this round trip is realistic on a layover of two to three hours and rushed on anything shorter.
South Terminal
The separate South Terminal (“Airport South”), about 4 km from the Main Terminal, handles regional BC carriers, charters and the floatplane dock; a free courtesy shuttle links it to the Main Terminal (the Canada Line SkyTrain serves only the Main Terminal). Smoking there follows the same pattern: outdoors only, in signed spots away from the doors.
Vaping and Cannabis
Vaping follows exactly the same rules as smoking: designated outdoor areas only, on the departures and arrivals levels. YVR’s policy applies to all substances, so e-cigarettes stay in your pocket anywhere indoors.
Cannabis is a genuine YVR distinction: the airport officially permits smoking and vaping cannabis in the same designated outdoor areas, and it was one of the first Canadian airports to allow it after legalization. It is banned everywhere else on the property, the airport sells none, and there are no amnesty boxes — if you are flying to the US or anywhere international, leave it at home, because crossing any border with cannabis is illegal.
