Yes, you can smoke at Edmonton International Airport (YEG) — in designated outdoor areas outside the terminal on both the Arrivals and Departures levels. They are landside (before security), and the terminal is smoke-free and vape-free inside.
Edmonton International is Alberta’s second-busiest airport and the main gateway for the Edmonton region, handling around eight million passengers a year. Smoking is straightforward here: step outside to one of the marked areas, and you are clear to light up.
Arrivals Level
The Arrivals (lower) level has three outdoor smoking areas outside the terminal:
- Outside Door 1, at the north end of the terminal
- Outside Door 10, at the south end of the terminal
- Across from Doors 5 and 7, between the terminal and the parkade
These are the closest options if you have just landed and are heading to baggage claim, ground transport or the parkade. Look for the signage and stand within the marked area, clear of the entrance doors.
Departures Level
The Departures (upper) level has two outdoor smoking areas outside the terminal:
- Outside Door 25, at the north end of the terminal
- Outside Door 30, at the south end of the terminal
If you are being dropped off or have time before check-in, these are the handiest spots. There is no indoor or airside smoking area at YEG, so smoke here before you clear security. Once you pass through screening there is no way to smoke without exiting and re-clearing security, which is only realistic on a longer connection.
Terminal Layout
Edmonton operates a single main terminal, with the Departures level above the Arrivals level and gates reached after a single security checkpoint. Domestic, US transborder and international flights are all handled under the one roof, and none of the gate areas has a post-security smoking room. That keeps the plan simple: your last chance to smoke is at one of the five outdoor areas landside, so allow a few minutes before you head to screening.
Vaping
Vaping and e-cigarettes are allowed in the same designated outdoor areas as cigarettes, on both the Arrivals and Departures levels. Under Alberta’s Tobacco, Smoking and Vaping Reduction Act, vaping follows the same rules as smoking and is not permitted anywhere inside the terminal. The outdoor areas also permit cloves and, with a valid prescription, medicinal cannabis.
