Bulgaria’s main airport is smoker-friendly only if you have lounge access: Sofia Airport’s airside smoking is confined to the Terminal 2 lounges, while the general terminal is smoke-free. There is no public indoor smoking room.
For international travel through Bulgaria, Sofia (SOF) is the airport that matters.
How Bulgarian Airport Smoking Works
Bulgaria’s indoor smoking ban (in force since 2012) covers airport terminals:
- Airside smoking only inside the Terminal 2 lounges — the Aspire Business Lounge (designated smoking area) and the Primeclass Lounge (open-air terrace with a smoking area), both by pass
- The general terminal and gates are smoke-free
- Landside smoking is outside the terminal entrance
- E-cigarettes are treated like tobacco — lounge smoking areas or outdoors only
The Hub
Sofia Airport (SOF). Bulgaria’s main gateway (Terminals 1 & 2). The airside smoking options are both in Terminal 2: the Aspire Business Lounge’s designated smoking area (Level 0, past security) and the Primeclass Lounge’s ~450 m² open-air panoramic terrace. Both need lounge access. Otherwise smoke outside the terminal before security.
Tips for Smokers at Bulgarian Airports
- Airside smoking at Sofia means a Terminal 2 lounge (Aspire or Primeclass) — buy entry or use an eligible ticket
- The Primeclass terrace is open-air with runway views — a pleasant smoke if you have access
- No lounge access? Smoke outside the terminal before security
- E-cigarettes follow the same rules as cigarettes
