Sofia Airport keeps a free half-open smoking area downstairs by gates B1-B4 in Terminal 2, open to every passenger after security, and two Terminal 2 lounges add smoking areas of their own. The rest of the T2 concourse and the whole of Terminal 1 airside are smoke-free, with designated outdoor areas outside both terminal entrances. Bulgaria’s two Black Sea coast airports, Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR), follow a simpler pattern: an open-air terrace in the departure lounge after security, plus the open air outside the terminal.
For international travel through Bulgaria, Sofia (SOF) is the airport that matters; Burgas and Varna serve the country’s southern and northern Black Sea coasts.
How Bulgarian Airport Smoking Works
Bulgaria’s indoor smoking ban (in force since 2012) covers airport terminals:
- Airside smoking is in Terminal 2 — a free half-open smoking area by gates B1-B4 for all passengers, plus the Aspire Business Lounge (indoor smoking section) and the Primeclass Lounge (open-air terrace), both by pass
- Terminal 1 airside and the rest of the T2 concourse are smoke-free
- Landside smoking is at the designated areas outside both terminal entrances
- E-cigarettes are treated like tobacco — the B-gates area, the lounge smoking areas, or outdoors
- Burgas and Varna each keep an open-air terrace in the departure lounge after security, plus the open air outside the terminal
Sofia Airport (SOF)
Bulgaria’s main gateway (Terminals 1 & 2). Every airside smoking option is in Terminal 2: a free half-open designated smoking area downstairs by gates B1-B4 with apron views, used for cigarettes and vapes alike; the Aspire Business Lounge’s indoor smoking section (Level 0, past passport control, ~€30 walk-in or Priority Pass/DragonPass); and the Primeclass Lounge’s open-air panoramic terrace, which opened in March 2026. Terminal 1 has no airside smoking, so from there smoke at the designated area outside the building before security.
Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR)
Bulgaria’s two coastal gateways, both operated by Fraport Bulgaria, follow the same rule: smoking is permitted on the open-air terrace in the departure lounge, airside after security, or outdoors outside the terminal, landside. Burgas Airport’s open-air departure terrace and Varna Airport’s own open-air terrace both work the same way. Neither airport uses the separate-room exception in Bulgaria’s Health Act (Article 56) — both smoking spots are open to the air, exempt from the indoor ban rather than inside a designated room.

- Flying from Terminal 2 at Sofia? Head downstairs towards gates B1-B4 for the free half-open smoking area — no pass needed
- Lounge users at Sofia get two more options: the Aspire indoor smoking section and the Primeclass open-air terrace with apron views
