Brunei International Airport (BWN) is entirely smoke-free — there is no smoking area inside the single passenger terminal, after security, or anywhere on the airport grounds. The only place to smoke is outdoors on the landside, where you must stand well clear of the building and keep at least 6 metres from any door before lighting up.
Brunei International Airport, in the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, is the country’s sole airport, handling every international and domestic flight through one terminal. Its smoke-free status is part of Brunei Darussalam’s wider tobacco controls, which grant airports no designated-area exemption.
Inside the Terminal
The terminal is a single building with a shared check-in concourse landside and a compact departures pier airside, and it is smoke-free throughout. There is no indoor smoking room, no ventilated cabin, and no airside terrace. The Royal Brunei Sky Lounge and the other airside lounges do not offer a smoking room either. Once you have cleared immigration and security, there is no way to smoke without leaving the sterile area and passing back through screening — so transit and connecting passengers effectively have no on-site option. Finish your cigarette before you enter the departures hall.
Landside and Outdoors
Outdoors on the landside is the only place smoking is possible, and even there it is tightly limited. Under Brunei’s Tobacco Order 2005, smoking is banned within 6 metres of any smoke-free building, which covers the terminal frontage, the covered kerbside and the entrance canopy. There is no marked or sheltered smoking area, so travellers who need to smoke step away from the doors toward the open car park or drop-off edge, keeping the full 6-metre clearance. Traveller-reported accounts describe the same routine: a quick cigarette out by the kerb, away from the entrance, before heading inside. Signage around the terminal marks it as a smoke-free building, and Brunei enforces its tobacco rules consistently, so respect the boundaries and do not smoke under the canopy. Plan to smoke before you arrive, as there is nowhere convenient to use once you are inside the building.
Vaping
Vaping is treated even more strictly than smoking. The sale and import of e-cigarettes are prohibited across Brunei, so you should not bring a vape into the country at all — bringing one in is a customs offence, and using a vape where smoking is banned is a separate offence. Do not vape anywhere at the airport or on the grounds.
