Yes, you can smoke at Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) — the airport’s own marked outdoor areas, with ashtrays, sit landside in front of the passenger terminal. Airside, past security, the paid Premium Lounge has an open-air balcony where smoking is allowed. Every enclosed part of the terminal building is smoke-free.
Sarajevo International Airport is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s main airport, carrying 2.23 million passengers in 2025. A December 2024 ban on tobacco use in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s enclosed public spaces closed the airport’s old indoor smoking room.
Landside: Outside the Terminal
The airport’s own guidance points to designated outdoor areas in front of the passenger terminal, marked with ashtrays, for tobacco use. This is the option for anyone before check-in, meeting or seeing off passengers, or arriving travellers heading outside after landing.
After Security: The Premium Lounge Balcony
Sarajevo Airport opened a new Premium Lounge in April 2024 — almost 400 square metres, seating up to 85 guests, with a buffet, showers, a prayer room and a balcony overlooking the apron and runway where smoking is allowed. The Premium Lounge is open to any passenger on a walk-in fee, so it works for smokers connecting through a Balkan hub on a layover without airline-status lounge access.
Vaping
The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s tobacco law extends its enclosed-space ban to e-cigarettes, so vaping at Sarajevo Airport follows the same outdoor-only rule as smoking: the marked outdoor points landside, or the Premium Lounge’s open-air balcony airside. The enclosed terminal, including the departure gates, is vape-free.
