Azerbaijan keeps its main airport comfortable for cigarette smokers, with enclosed indoor smoking cabins after security that are listed on the official airport’s own facilities page. But there’s a big change coming for vapers: a nationwide e-cigarette ban takes effect on 1 April 2026.
For international travel through Azerbaijan, Baku (GYD) is the airport that matters, as a modern Caspian hub.
How Azerbaijani Airport Smoking Works
Azerbaijan’s 2017 tobacco law bans smoking in enclosed public places except designated areas:
- Enclosed indoor smoking cabins after security at Baku (officially listed)
- The Premium Bank Lounge (Terminal 1) has smoking cabins just outside it
- Outdoor designated areas landside; the fine for smoking elsewhere is ~30 AZN
- Vaping is banned nationwide from 1 April 2026 (import, sale, possession and use); heated tobacco remains legal
The Hub
Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD). Azerbaijan’s main gateway and AZAL’s hub (Terminals 1 and 2). The official airport site has a “Smoking Cabins” page confirming enclosed indoor cabins in the terminals. Travellers report airside cabins near Gates 1 and 12 and a cabin in the arrivals area. The cabins are for combustible cigarettes — note the nationwide vape ban from April 2026.
Tips for Smokers at Azerbaijani Airports
- Baku has airside indoor smoking cabins — you don’t need to leave the secure zone to smoke
- The cabins are near the gates (reported around Gates 1 and 12) and just outside the Premium Bank Lounge
- Do not bring a vape after 1 April 2026 — e-cigarettes are banned nationwide
- Smoking outside designated areas can draw a ~30 AZN fine
