Yes, Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) has designated outdoor smoking areas outside all three terminal buildings. Light up in the marked areas near the terminal entrances and drop-off zones before you clear security or immigration — there is no airside smoking anywhere at Sydney, so plan your last cigarette landside.
Sydney is Australia’s busiest airport and splits its traffic across three physically separate terminals: T1 for international flights, and T2 and T3 for domestic flights a couple of kilometres away. Each terminal has its own outdoor smoking areas, and none of them are shared, so the right area depends entirely on where you are flying from. Under the New South Wales smoke-free rules, every outdoor area sits at least 4 metres from a terminal entrance, and each is marked with signage and ground paint.
Terminal 1 (International)
T1 handles all international departures and arrivals. The main outdoor smoking areas are at both ends of the departures drop-off zone, near check-in counters A and J/K — step outside the terminal on the departures roadway and walk to either end. There is also a departures terrace reached through a corridor between the public toilets and out through double doors, opening onto an outdoor deck with tables, chairs, and partial cover — handy in Sydney’s rain or summer heat. On the arrivals level, outdoor areas sit at each end of the building near the pickup lanes.
The key limit at T1 is that all of these areas are landside. Once you have checked in and cleared immigration and security for an international flight, there is no smoking area beyond the screening point, and no way back out without re-clearing the whole process.
Terminal 2 (Domestic — Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Rex)
T2 serves Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Rex, and other domestic carriers. To reach the smoking area, exit the building and turn right, then walk to the end of the terminal where there is a marked area with some seats under cover. It is reachable from both the arrivals and departures levels, so you can use it whether you are landing or flying out. As with T1, it sits outside the terminal, before the domestic security screening point.
Terminal 3 (Domestic — Qantas)
T3 is the dedicated Qantas domestic terminal, next door to T2. Its smoking areas are marked outside the terminal entrance, near the drop-off and pickup roadway. Step out through the main doors and look for the signposted areas set back from the building. There is no smoking area past security inside T3.
Getting Between Terminals
T1 (international) is separate from T2 and T3 (domestic), connected by the T-Bus shuttle and by train on the Airport Line. T2 and T3 are within short walking distance of each other. Because each terminal keeps its own outdoor smoking areas and none is shared, there is no need to change terminals just to smoke — use the areas at whichever terminal you are checking in at.
Transit and Connecting Passengers
Sydney has no airside or transit smoking area in any terminal, so a long international layover offers no way to smoke without leaving the secure zone. International transit passengers would need to clear immigration and customs, use a landside outdoor area, then re-check in and pass through security again — practical only with a long connection and a re-entry plan. For a domestic connection, the same rule applies on a smaller scale: exit past the arrivals area, smoke at the outdoor point, and re-screen for your next flight; allow 30 to 45 minutes for the round trip so you are not rushing your gate. If an uninterrupted smoke is essential mid-journey, Brisbane International (BNE) is the only Australian airport with a post-security smoking facility.
