Yes, Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (MEL) has designated outdoor smoking areas near the terminal entrances. You will find marked zones outside Terminals 2, 3 and 4, plus a ground-level area between T2 and T3.
Smoking Areas at Melbourne Airport
Melbourne Airport has four terminals. Smoking is banned inside all of them, and there are no airside smoking areas.
Terminal Layout:
| Terminal | Airlines | Smoking Access |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | Qantas domestic | Outdoor areas near T2 |
| T2 | International | Outdoor designated areas |
| T3 | Virgin Australia domestic | Outdoor designated areas |
| T4 | Jetstar, Rex, Link Airways | Outdoor designated areas |
Outdoor Smoking Areas:
Melbourne Airport has created smoke-free zones at the arrivals and departures entrances of T2, T3, and T4, clearly marked with signage. Under the airport’s policy you must stay at least 8 metres from any doorway and 10 metres from ventilation intakes. The limited passenger smoking areas sit in the terminal forecourt adjacent to the building on both the arrivals and departures levels, including a ground-level spot between T2 and T3.
The airport does not prominently publish maps of smoking area locations. Look for signage on-site directing you away from entrance smoke-free zones.
Transit Passengers:
Melbourne Airport is unable to provide smoking areas for transiting passengers. Customs and Border Security do not permit transit passengers to exit the terminal. If you are connecting between international flights, you will not be able to smoke during your layover.
