Yes, you can smoke at Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) — in the open air outside the terminal building, before you check in or go through security. The terminal itself, including the departure gates, is entirely smoke-free.
Queen Beatrix International Airport sits just outside Oranjestad and is Aruba’s only airport. It is run by the Aruba Airport Authority N.V. (AAA), whose own published House Rules set the smoking policy inside the building.
Where to Smoke: Outside the Terminal
Under Article 9 of AAA’s official House Rules and Regulations, “smoking and/or vaping inside the airport terminal buildings is not allowed.” That covers the whole building — check-in hall, arrivals and the departure gates — so open-air smoking outside the building is permitted; the airport names no designated or signed smoking area. Plan to have your last cigarette or vape before you enter the building for check-in or before you head through security, since there is no smoking area once you are inside.
This is a change from the airport’s older layout. Until 2022, AUA had an indoor smoking spot at the One Happy Bar; the airport authority closed it that year when Aruba’s national tobacco law took effect. At the time, AAA said it would designate outdoor smoking areas outside the airport “in the coming weeks” — and its published rules since then name no marked outdoor spot.
After Security and US Preclearance
There is no smoking area anywhere past the security checkpoint. Passengers connecting through Aruba on a longer layover cannot smoke airside and would need to exit back outside the terminal and re-clear security.
Travellers flying to the United States face an extra step: Aruba Airport operates US Customs and Border Protection preclearance, so US-bound passengers clear US immigration and customs before boarding. Once through preclearance you are in a sterile departure area with no way back outside, so smoke or vape before you enter that queue, not after.
Vaping
Aruba’s smoking rule treats vaping the same as cigarettes. Article 9 explicitly bans e-cigarette use inside the terminal buildings alongside tobacco, so vapers use the same open-air area outside the building as smokers, and the same timing rules apply around security and US preclearance.
